HOBY International Tour

HOBY has partnered with EF Tours to provide a new alumni program. The program is developed exclusively for HOBY alumni and not only will take students to amazing locations, but will also integrate leadership activities and community service projects where available. The 2012 tours offer a chance for high school students to explore Europe over the summer! For more information about this program, contact Cheryl Brenn at brennc@hoby.org.

America's Promise

Youth Partnership Team America's Promise is accepting applications for the Youth Partnership Team, the organization's top level youth leadership body composed of 15 leaders between the ages of 14 and 22. The Team will work at the national level to help develop and implement youth engagement initiatives, act as a sounding board to staff, and represent the organization as spokespeople and trainers. Congressional Award

Alumni Opportunities

The Congressional Award is a public-private partnership created by Congress to provide a unique opportunity for young people ages 14-23 to set and achieve personally challenging goals that build character and foster community service, personal development, and citizenship. Established in 1979 under Public Law 96-114, the Congressional Award Foundation does not receive any federal funding. All funds necessary to run the program come from the private sector. The Congressional Award is non-competitive and open to all young Americans regardless of mental or physical challenges, or socioeconomic status. It is the first and only award for youth legislated by the U. S. Congress. Through this award, the U.S. Congress looks to honor and encourage volunteer public service and recognize the unsung and important accomplishments of young Americans throughout the United States. Erskine College

Erskine LogoErskine College, located in Due West, S.C., in historic Abbeville County, was founded in 1839 by the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. The Foundation for Teaching Economics

Week-long “Economics for Leaders” residential programs provide students who have just completed their junior year in high school with an exceptional opportunity to learn economics and leadership while engaging in games and simulations. Get a jump on your classmates in understanding economic principles and visit some of the most prestigious colleges in the country. These programs are fun!

HOBY World Leadership Congress

HOBY’s annual World Leadership Congress (WLC) takes place each summer. Four hundred students from at least twenty countries are expected to attend HOBY’s special international program comprised of speakers’ panels, interactive workshops, and field trips. The WLC is an intermediate level HOBY leadership program, and US high school sophomores are only eligible to attend once they have completed a HOBY state leadership seminar. Since few countries outside of the U.S. have state leadership seminars, eligible international students must be between the ages of 15 and 17.

Intrax Study Abroad

Most students leave their respective HOBY program with new friends, lots of ideas and a strong desire to make a difference in the world. Through Intrax’s multiple study abroad opportunities (many of which have scholarships or special HOBY discounts) HOBY alumni are able to further pursue their ambitions on a global level during their junior and senior year as a student Ambassador of the U.S. This is a golden opportunity to make more new friends, learn a new language, build self-confidence and develop cross-cultural insight. Junior Optimist Octagon International

Octagon Clubs are for youth ages 14 to 18. These Clubs hone their leadership skills and teach them to identify needs in their local community, and plan projects and fundraisers to address those needs. For more information, e-mail: youthclubs@optimist.org.

Ohio Northern University

OHN LogoIn recognition of the outstanding accomplishments of HOBY alumni, Ohio Northern University offers a HOBY scholarship of up to $8,000 per year to all qualified HOBY alumni. The scholarship is automatically awarded to HOBY alumni who enroll to Ohio Northern, and the scholarship is renewable for four years. Founded in 1871, Ohio Northern University is a private, comprehensive University, comprising five colleges with nationally ranked arts, sciences, and professional programs. Talented students enter motivated, engage in abundant opportunities, and leave prepared with an education with one of the highest returns on investment in the state and the nation.

State Farm Youth Advisory Board

The State Farm Youth Advisory Board is a group of 30 diverse youth who administer a unique grant program that empowers youth to take an active role in their education through service-learning. By administering service-learning grants ranging from $25,000 - $100,000, the board empowers youth to create sustainable change in local communities across the US and Canada. Applications to join this board are now being accepted.

Scholarship Opportunities

Emerging Scholars Award

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), an honor society for high-achieving first and second year college students, is launching a new scholarship called Emerging Scholars, aimed at making college success a reality for deserving high school students. Emerging Scholars reflects NSCS' ongoing commitment to supporting high-achieving students and fostering early collegiate success. The Emerging Scholars Program will award $1,000 scholarships to high-achieving high school seniors who plan to enroll at a university or community college that has an NSCS chapter. Erskine College

Erskine logoErskine College offers 2010 & 2011 South Carolina HOBY alumni a $10,000 per year (total award $40,000) as long as they meet admissions requirements. 2011 HOBY graduates from other states will receive $5,000 per year (total award $20,000) as long as they meet the admissions requirements.

Florida State University

Florida State University is pleased to present the application for the Service Scholar Program for the 2012- 2013 academic year. The Service Scholar Program recognizes select incoming students with an outstanding record of community service and leadership, and who want to continue that commitment at FSU. The Program benefits include a scholarship valued at $2,400 per year for up to four years, exposure to a diverse group of individuals and social issues, an academic component, and support by an assigned faculty mentor. For more information about the benefits, requirements, and application process please visit the Center for Leadership and Civic Education online at http://thecenter.fsu.edu/servicescholars.html. Los Angeles World Affairs Council

The Los Angeles World Affairs Council awards a $2,500 scholarship to a graduating high school student from a public, Los Angeles County high school who is embarking on a higher-learning degree with an international emphasis.  The scholarship is renewable for up to five years.

Marietta College - Ohio

All students accepted to Marietta College who are also HOBY Ambassadors will be invited to compete in the Marietta College Pioneer Scholarship competition. All HOBY Ambassadors will receive a baseline Dean's Scholarship valued at $8,000 and will have the opportunity to increase the value of the scholarship up to full tuition per year to attend Marietta College.

Millersville University of Pennsylvania

A $1,000 scholarship is available for applicants who rank in top tenth of class, have minimum combined SAT I score of 1170, and provide documentation of being a Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Conference participant.

The Morehead-Cain

Morehead-Cain Logo

The Morehead-Cain is the oldest, most prestigious merit scholarship program in the United States. It promises:

  • A four-year merit scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, including full tuition, student fees, housing, meals, books and a laptop, travel, supplies and miscellaneous expenses.
  • A four-year Summer Enrichment Program-beginning the summer before freshman year-made up of diverse, customized experiences focused on:
  • Outdoor Leadership
  • Public Service
  • International Research
  • Private Enterprise
  • Discovery Funds to be used for unique educational opportunities.

Mount St. Mary's University

Mount St. Mary's UniversityAll students accepted to Mount St. Mary's University who are HOBY Ambassadors will be invited to compete in the Founder's Essay Scholarship competition. All HOBY Ambassadors will receive a base Dean's Scholarship of $12,000.

Oxfam America CHANGE Initiative

Each year, Oxfam's CHANGE Initiative uses leadership and advocacy training to teach a select group of US college students about the global fight against poverty, hunger, and injustice. Students then transform this knowledge into action on campus and in their communities.

CHANGE Leaders' commitment to making a difference often goes far beyond the one-year program. They've attended meetings of the WTO and the G8 leaders, spoken at the UN Youth Assembly, and founded two independent national student organizations-to name just a few accomplishments.

Robertson Scholars

Robertson Scholars ProgramThe Robertson Scholars Program is a leadership development merit scholarship program at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The program brings together outstanding young individuals from around the world who demonstrate exceptional leadership, strength of character, high academic potential, generosity of spirit, and the energy necessary to accomplish great things. With unparalleled access to two renowned universities, a series of unique summer enrichment experiences, and individualized mentoring and coaching from a dedicated program staff, Robertson Scholars benefit from numerous opportunities that enable them to fully realize their leadership potential.

Wittenberg University - Ohio

Wittenberg is unique in awarding the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Scholarship to HOBY Ambassadors who demonstrate outstanding achievements in high school, excellent personal references, and involvement in co-curricular activities. Students identified as candidates for these scholarships are invited to campus for a scholarship interview. Scholarships are in the amount of $3,000 and are renewable for three years. Scholarships are only to attend Wittenberg University.

Youth for Understanding - USA

Do you want to make a difference in today's multicultural, interconnected world? HOBY has already identified you as a promising young leader, and Youth for Understanding (YFU) would like to offer you the opportunity to continue developing your skills and talents on a YFU international exchange. Youth for Understanding USA (YFU USA) is pleased to announce one YFU-HOBY scholarship in the amount of $3,000 toward a YFU summer, semester or year program leaving in the summer. The Do Something Awards

The Do Something Awards (formerly the BR!CK Awards) identifies exceptional young social entrepreneurs, activists, and community leaders who have a significant social impact. The Do Something Award nominees and winners are the pivotal "do-ers" in their fields and causes. For this year's awards five finalists will be selected and rewarded with a $10,000 community grant, participation in the third Do Something Awards TV show on VH1, media coverage, and continued support from DoSomething.org. Of those five nominees, one will be selected to win the Grand Prize, a $100,000 grant, which will be announced during the broadcast. Applicants must be citizens or residents of the U.S. or Canada and must apply by March 1st, 2012, although applying earlier is strongly encouraged.
