Volunteer Awards

Printable version

HOBY’s success is a direct result of the hundreds of volunteers who serve key leadership roles on its corporate boards and program committees. Each August, HOBY proudly recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of its affiliates and volunteers through volunteer achievement awards. Key volunteers in the positions of Corporation President, Leadership Seminar Chairperson, Alumni Advisor and CLeW Director are invited to apply for an award in each of their categories in July. In addition, all volunteers are encouraged to nominate individuals for the HOBY Volunteer of the Year Award, presented to two volunteers selected by a committee of peers. Special certificates are also awarded.

Below is a listing of the 2007 award winners. HOBY is grateful to all of the men and women who generously contribute their time, efforts, talents and enthusiasm to make HOBY’s leadership programs for youth possible.

Awards for HOBY Affiliate Corporations

Awards are based upon overall performance and the completion of milestones in the areas of Management, Finance, Program and Public Relations. Corporate Boards that meet the required criteria qualify as either Superior or Outstanding. Recognition indicates that HOBY believes the awarded Corporate Boards are the models for all corporations.

Volunteer of the Year Awards

Two volunteers are recognized annually as HOBY’s "Volunteers of the Year." Applications are taken through a formal nomination process and recognition is given based upon years of service, contributions to HOBY, nominator’s written comments, and other community service involvement. Recipients are announced at the annual volunteer Training Institute and honored at the World Leadership Congress.

Carol Applegate, Maryland

Carol Applegate has an enthusiasm for HOBY that is contagious. Her passion and drive is notorious for infecting others with “the HOBY fever” that keeps volunteers and supporters hooked in HOBY Maryland. Carol possesses a wonderful gift to be able to motivate volunteers, ambassadors, and parents to get involved and more importantly stay involved with HOBY. Carol will be celebrating 25 years with HOBY this year.

Dee Fife, Kentucky

Dee Fife’s commitment to making sure HOBY did not remain the “best kept secret” in youth leadership is one of reasons why she was recognized as a 2007 Volunteer of the Year. As a 1986 HOBY alumna, HOBY Kentucky volunteer and Board of Trustees member, Dee is passionate about HOBY’s mission and embodies life with HOBY. Her ability to motivate a group of students and volunteers is exceptional, and she is always willing to try a new idea or technique to make the organization the best it can be.
